Throughout Corvette history, there have been many collectible and rare Corvettes built. We can all appreciate the design of the '63 Split window or the stylings of a gorgeous '57. But, for many, including the infamous Zora Arkus Duntov, there is none better then the often forgotten about 1970-1972 LT-1 Corvette. This is the Vette that did away with the typical thinking of bigger is better and offered 454 big block acceleration and power without compromising balance and handling performance. With a high revving small block 350ci engine and a 4-Speed manual transmission to run through the gears, an LT-1 Corvette offered neck-snapping acceleration and the ability to take corners the likes of any European sports car.
To achieve it's legendary performance, the 1970-1972 LT-1 used some of the best internal engine parts GM ever made. A solid lifter motor featuring a forged steel crankshaft, 4-bolt main block, impact extruded pistons, high-lift camshaft, low restriction exhaust, aluminum intake manifold, 4-barrel 800 cfm Holley carburetor, and finned aluminum valve covers. Mated with the required Muncie 4-Speed, these mechanical gems produced sounds and a driving experience never to be experienced again in a production car. The 1970-1972 LT-1 marked the end of an era. It was the last solid lifter V8 produced by GM.
Aside from its incredible performance characteristics, a “real deal” documented 1970-1972 LT-1 Corvette is a “Blue Chip” investment grade Corvette due to its rarity. However, what's even more rare is finding a documented 1972 LT1 with factory air conditioning. You see, for the first two years, Chevy wouldn't offer AC on a LT1 engine. It was only in 1972 that they finally offered it as an option, but even then they were so concerned with whether or not the AC could hold together on the high-revving small block that they actually went as far to leave the 5600 redline RPM gauge that was standard for the 454 big block in the gauge cluster to deter people away from revving it to high. If you notice, any other LT1 from 70-72 has a 6500 RPM redline tach in it! How unique is that!
Out of the 20,000+ corvettes that were built in 1972, only 1741 of them were ordered with the LT1 engine. Of those, it's generally noted that only 240 left that factory with factory A/C. But it's not known how many of those were convertibles, many corvette enthusiasts have done the math as far as production % and it's generally assumed that less than 30 were LT1/AC/convertibles. This gorgeous 1972 Corvette LT1 convertible is one of these rare Vettes. Restored and documented by still having the original tank sticker on the fuel tank, this LT1 belongs in any serious Corvette collector's garage.
Adding more to the legacy of this great Corvette, this LT1 was originally owned by the late Bob McDermon who was a prolific corvette collector. This wasn't one of the ones that sold in his massive sale he had 5 years ago or so, rather he sold this one in 1984. For the first 12-years of its life it was in the hands of this collector and was sold from his collection with 40,524 miles. We know these details, because this vette comes with complete ownership history. Actually, not only do we have the complete ownership history, but each owner seemed to know exactly how rare this vehicle was and held on to every receipt that they ever spent on the car from 1978 on! That's right, we have every receipt, registration, bill of sale, copies of titles, inspections, etc.. from 1978 on! All of those receipts point to one thing - Everyone who has owned this vehicle cared for it and meticulously maintained it.
Today it sits in incredible shape and the current owner has owned the vehicle since he purchased it from the experts at Pro-Team Corvette in 1998. The engine has been rebuilt back to factory specs, it received a very expensive $7,000 full paint job in 1997 and today you can see that money was well spent as it clearly was performed by a shop who knew what they were doing. The removable hardtop is in good shape, but it does have a minor dime-size cut in the vinyl on the top.
